82%of US shoppers who had returned an online purchase said free returns were a major purchase consideration.

49%of UK shoppers reported abandoning a clothing or footwear purchase over an unsatisfactory returns policy.

One returns policy for every basket costs you either way.

A refund after you've paid to acquire, ship and support an order leaves you with the costs and no sale.

Charge everyone

You save postage and lose purchases

Hesitant shoppers walk away at checkout, often the ones who would have kept what they bought.

Free for everyone

You subsidise your most expensive orders

One fashion-retailer study found the extra return costs exceeded the extra gross profit.

With Kept

The offer matches the basket

Free returns where reassurance wins a profitable sale. Standard terms where it doesn't. A control group shows which is which.

Win the sales that free returns can actually win

Show free returns to the shoppers and baskets where reassurance generates additional profitable purchases, and learn who actually responds.

Measured as: conversion and contribution profit per visitor against a control group.

Example

Size M
£120
Return postage£3.95 Free
Free returns on this orderNot sure about the fit? Send it back within 30 days at no cost.

Fix the wrong order before it ships

Match benefits to expected return cost. Help customers correct suitable orders before dispatch, avoiding unnecessary shipping and processing.

Measured as: operational return costs avoided, after the benefits you give.

Example
Your order hasn't shipped yet

You ordered the same jacket in two sizes. Want help choosing?

Turn the refund into an exchange they keep

After delivery, help customers find an available size, colour or alternative, and resolve suitable return requests with an exchange they want to keep.

Measured as: exchanges ultimately kept, once return windows close.

Example
Too small? Size L is in stock.

Prefer a refund? That stays available.

Same store. Different basket. Different offer.

Kept uses AI and proprietary scoring to choose return offers from customer, product and basket data. Pick a basket to see the idea.

Example Kept would offer
Free return postage

Fit uncertainty is holding this shopper back and the economics support the offer, so Kept shows free returns before payment.

Before purchase

Score the basket

Estimate return likelihood and cost from product history, basket mix and available customer history.

Before purchase

Show the offer

Choose from your approved matrix, show terms before payment and save them against the order.

After checkout

Help correct orders

Offer a size correction or cancellation before dispatch, when appropriate.

After delivery

Arrange exchanges

Guide customers to an in-stock exchange, with human support available.

Outcomes improve the score. Every order's result feeds back in, and a customer-level control group shows what actually increases profit.

You set the boundaries. Agreed terms stay fixed.

You own the policy, the product decisions and the customer relationship. Kept works inside the limits you approve.

  • Benefits you choose. Return postage, exchange incentives, extended windows.
  • Cost limits and exceptions. Cap what an order can receive. Exclude products or sale items.
  • Terms saved per order. Later rule changes never rewrite what a shopper agreed to.
  • Your returns portal stays. Agreed terms pass to your existing returns system. Each pilot starts with one portal, validated first.

Prove it on one store first.

Start narrow. Expand only when the policy improves profit and the workflow holds up.

  1. 1Free assessment. We review your returns policy and customer reviews from your store URL and identify one opportunity to test.
  2. 2Agree the policy. Eligible baskets, offers, exceptions and the fallback, validated with your returns portal before launch.
  3. 3Controlled trial. Customers are split consistently between your current policy and the new offer. Success metric agreed upfront.
  4. 4Profit readout. Sales kept, return costs avoided and exchanges retained, after benefits and fees, once return windows mature.

The first three pilot brands pay no software fee for 60 days. After that, £0.30 per order with a £500 monthly minimum; return labels at cost.

Free returns can lift sales and still lose money.

31.6% higher purchase rate

from free-return offers in late-stage retargeting, in one field experiment. That is a relative lift for that intervention, not a sitewide forecast. Effects varied by customer and product.

7.86% more items returned

per order, alongside 9.15% higher order value, after one fashion retailer introduced free returns. Estimated extra return costs exceeded the additional gross profit.

Turning 100 refunds into kept items

An illustration, not a result. A 10,000-order month with 25% of orders returned at £15 operational cost each.

Gross profit preserved at £80 AOV and 35% margin£2,800
Fully avoidable return costs£1,500

Questions brands ask

Does this change my customers' statutory rights?

No. Statutory consumer rights always apply. Kept only varies the extra benefits you choose to offer, such as free return postage or exchange incentives, and every shopper sees their terms before paying.

What do you need from us for a pilot?

Read access to Shopify orders, item-level refunds and product data, plus returns data from your portal where available. For the free assessment, just your store URL.

Do I need Shopify Plus?

Plus gives the most control over checkout, but it isn't required for the assessment. We confirm what your store supports before agreeing a pilot.

How do you measure whether it made money?

A customer-level control group stays on your current policy. We report contribution profit per visitor, conversion, refunds, exchanges and return costs, after benefits and software fees, so shoppers who would have bought anyway are counted honestly.

Which returns portals do you work with?

We start with one portal per pilot and validate it against real refund and exchange cases, including partial returns and mixed baskets. Loop, ReturnGO, Narvar, ZigZag and Redo are in scope first.
